Research into Film Classification-
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is responsible for rating the age suitability of films before they are distributed to cinemas. Classifications provided by the BBFC are based on guidelines that are accumulated through previous experience and public consultation. They reflect current views and beliefs, and are regularly updated.
The guidelines can be flexible depending on the context, tone and impact of the work, and the format, such as cinema or DVD release. Other deciding factors include: discrimination, drugs, horror, language, violence, nudity, sex, sexual violence and theme. There are six main classifications, however a seventh rating of R18 exists for licensed cinemas only.
Racist, homophobic and other discriminatory behaviour may be present in a 15 film, drug taking may be shown but not encouraged. Realism, context and setting are key to deciding if self harm and suicide can be present. There may be very strong language, and there may be on constraints on nudity. Suicide Squad Trailer
A film rated as 18 is suitable only for adults, and can include both sex works and sex education. The material or treatment may harm public health or morals. All language is acceptable including racist and homophobic, and graphic violence is permitted. Hitch Trailer
