Research into Topic - PTSD

What is PTSD?
- A psychiartic disorder that often occurs after a life-threatening experience such as military combat, natural disasters or serious accidents. Many individuals with PTSD may relive the trauma through flashbacks and nightmares, like Georgie in our film.
- PTSD first came to light after soldiers returned from WW1 and WW2, reffered to as 'shell shock', but wasn't officially recognised as a mental health condition until the 1980s. The most effective treatments are Psychotherapy or Antidepressants.

Why Does PTSD Happen?
- The flashbacks force the victim to think about the details of the events so they may be better prepared next time, which is an evolutionary adaptation to help them survive. Because replaying the events are very tiring, people often turn to Avoidance or Numbing to make the flashbacks more managble, and the survivors are often 'on guard' in case they need to react quickly again.
- The vivid memories may keep a person's stress level high, making them irritable, tense, and unable to relax or sleep.
